Stepping in for Family - Caring for a Foster Parent

Over the last year, Missio has felt called to care for kids and families in the margins. We have begun working with Safe Families for Children, and by extension, the foster care system in Oregon.

Juliette Cutts is part of our family at Missio and has tremendous love and compassion for kids, particularly those in crisis situations. In June, Juliette and her daughter, Jordann, lovingly welcomed a sweet 18-month old girl into their home, who is temporarily in Juliette's care after being placed in foster care. Juliette and Jordann (and their puppies) have opened their lives and hearts wide open for this sweet girl.

As a community, we’re called to take care of each other, and as an extension of Juliette's family, we get to help care for sweet girl in whatever ways that we can. Here are two immediate and tangible ways we can help:

1) Provide Respite Care:

We are looking for people to provide occasional care for sweet girl. If you love little kids, and are willing to be background checked by DHS, please reach out to Christine Kan at 503-348-6770 to start the process. Sweet girl is in daycare during the day Monday-Friday, but respite care is needed overnight (pickup from daycare and drop off to daycare next morning), overnights on the weekends, or even pockets of time throughout the weekend. This would allow Juliette to get some rest - she has not been able to sleep and it is impacting her health. Please prayerfully consider this. Bringing a child into your home/life is not a small ask, but this is a beautiful way for us to support Juliette. Sweet girl is adorable and they are having so much fun (if you know Juliette and Jordann, this is no surprise!) - but they need our help to get SLEEP so they can continue to care well.

2) Share the Financial Responsibility:

The state only pays for 25% of childcare costs for children in foster care. This means Juliette has to pay over $1000/month to cover the rest of the necessary care costs. We’ve set up a gofundme to help cover the costs for June and July - we will raise an additional amount as needed in the future. Please contribute what you can to help shoulder the costs - $5, $25, $50, $100 or more. No amount is "too small" or “too large” - we know every amount will be given thoughtfully and lovingly.

Caring for another human is incredible work, and we'd love to support Juliette in these ways while uncertainties lie ahead for this family. We’re calling Missio to stand in the gap and step in together to support this family.

Please contribute as you can. Please also pray for this family - for Juliette and Jordann and sweet girl.

Multnomah Days // Saturday, Aug 17, 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.

This year, we will be hosting a booth at Multnomah Days in partnership with Riversgate and Greater Portland Bible Church. This is an opportunity for our churches to be a visible presence of the love of Jesus in our community by having fun with our neighbors. We will be doing face painting, handing out snow cones, and just being part of the festivities. Sign up HERE to volunteer.

Community Care Day // Saturday August 24

Missio exists to make Jesus more fully known in our city. Community Care Day is a tangible way to show God’s desire to transform and renew all things through the life and love of Jesus. On Saturday August 24 from 9am-12pm, our weekly Expression will be through meeting tangible needs at Rieke and Hayhurst Elementary schools. Come serve alongside our neighbors by painting, building, gardening, yard work, prepping classrooms, and connecting with people from the community.  Bring your garden tools and gloves.

To allow space for rest in your weekend we will not have a Sunday Expression. Come support our neighbors on Saturday morning as an expression of God’s love and rest well on Sunday.

Please choose one of the locations and join us.

Hayhurst Elementary (5037 SW Iowa St, Portland, OR 97221)

Mary Rieke Elementary (1405 SW Vermont St, Portland, OR 97219)

Communities of Practice // Wednesdays 6:30-7:30

Whether you heard the talk on Sunday afternoon or not, come to the Community of Practice on Wednesday for engagement and practical tools around the topic of the week.

When: Wednesdays, June 19 - August 14 , 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Baptisms // Sun Aug 11

Part of Jesus’ final instructions to his followers was to “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit” (Matt. 28:19, also seen in Acts 2:38 & 41). For those who have chosen to follow Jesus and accept him as savior, we see baptism both as a commandment and as an outward expression of God’s inner work. On August 11 during our Expression, we will celebrate baptisms as a community. If you have not yet been baptized and want to sign up to be baptized , or if you have questions about baptism, contact Joel.

Pure Desire Conquer Series // June 20 - Sept. 12

The Pure Desire Conquer Series is designed to help men walk in freedom from unwanted sexual behaviors and addiction. This 11-week course is full of biblical teaching and practical application tools to equip men with a battle plan for experiencing healing and victory through God's grace and a supportive community.

The current cohort is now closed, but contact Dom if you’re interested in participating in one of the cohorts in the future.
