SW Hope 5K // Sat. Apr. 14

SWHope5k_2016.jpg

Every spring, multiple Southwest Portland Faith Organizations and Community Partners join hands to meet the need of hunger specifically, by working to supply Neighborhood House’s food pantry, the largest food pantry west of the Willamette.

We were blown away by the many folks who joined hands with us last year. Together with a matching gift from the Richard and Helen Phillips Charitable Fund we raised more than $10,000 - the equivalent of more than 40,000 pounds for the Emergency Food Box Program at Neighborhood House!

This is where you come in. We invite you to run with us in our third annual SW Hope Feed the Hungry 5K on Sat. April 14, 2018 at 9am at Gabriel Park because each $1 we raise together far outweighs it’s worth in canned goods individually.  If we run together, our neighbors here in SW Portland won’t have to experience the insecurity of not knowing where their next meal is coming from.

Cost: $35/Adult - $10/Kids Fun Run (10 and under)

SW HOPE: Feed the Hungry // Feb. 11 - Apr. 14

swhope.jpg

The 12th annual SW HOPE: Feed the Hungry campaign runs from February 11 through April 14. This year, 40+ faith and other community partners are fighting hunger in our community by collecting food and funds in support of Neighborhood House’s Emergency Food Box Program.

Neighborhood House operates the largest food pantry on Portland's West Side, currently providing emergency food boxes for over 1,400 individuals each month. This year, the goal is to collect 200,000 pounds of food ($1 = four pounds of food) over the course of the SW HOPE campaign. This amount will allow us to feed our hungry neighbors for three months.

Participating is a great way to tangibly meet needs in our community and bring God’s Kingdom in our neighbors' lives. There are many ways for the Missio family to be involved, including donating food, money, dining at local restaurants that have “Dine to Donate” events, and of course, participating in different fundraiser events including the SW Hope 5k Run/Walk! Visit the website for more details.

Missio Meet Up - Connect Night // Sat. Feb. 17

nathan-dumlao-264380.jpg

Meet Ups provide opportunities for the Missio Community to build authentic relationships so that we can be disciples who make disciples.

  • WHY: As disciples, we are called into healthy community and relationships and growing them takes time and intentionality. Sometimes parents need intentional uninterrupted times to connect with others. The same is true for kids. Kids need a place where they can be kids together and build friendships. Connect Night provides kids, parents and adults each an intentional space to connect.
  • WHAT: Invite other adults and/or parents at Missio that you don't know well to share a meal. Use the uninterrupted time to be intentional and share one another stories.
  • WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 17 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm
  • CHILD CARE: The 72 Missional Community is providing child care at Riversgate Church (7634 SW Capitol Hwy, Portland, OR 97219). Room location: TBD. Please RSVP for childcare at walt.wimmer@gmail.com.

Work as Worship // Friday, Feb. 23

andrew-neel-308138.jpg

Many people spend a great deal of time at work and yet they don’t see how their work intersects with their faith. Part of our growth as followers of Jesus is realizing that there isn’t a divide between the sacred and secular parts of our lives and that working with our God-given skills can be an act of worship. Come learn with others and be encouraged to live into a more holistic understanding of your work and faith.

IF: Gathering // Sat. Mar. 10

IF-Table.jpg

Our local IF gatherings exist because we care deeply for you as a woman and your understanding and development as a daughter and disciple of Jesus, and we know the importance of this being done in community. It's a space for us to process together what God is saying to us through teachings from the IF Gathering (https://www.ifgathering.com/) and women in our community, and how we'll respond to Him. What does it mean for us to be disciples in all arenas of our lives: our relationships, jobs, schools, church, city, and world? Thankfully, we get to wrestle with these things together in community, and it doesn't have to be alone. Please join us and invite others!

This year, we will meet twice: this gathering on Saturday, March 10 and another in Fall. Coffee, breakfast snacks and lunch will be provided! Please bring $5 to contribute towards food/event costs.

RSVP here!

When: Saturday, March 10, 9:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Where: Greater Portland Bible Church Youth Building, 2374 SW Vermont St. Portland 97219

Missio Marriage Enrichment Seminar // Friday, Mar. 16

#COMMUNICATIONTHATWORKS

All healthy relationships start and end with good communication. It's like dribbling in a basketball game. You really cannot make many other plays happen without it. Sometimes communication can be smooth as butter and other times it feels a little more like lumpy milk that's gone sour fast. Whether you are wanting to maintain a healthy relationship or need a decent tune-up, leave your phones and busy lives for a date night on Friday, March 16, to come grow in the art of effective communication with Living Wholehearted founders, Jeff and Terra Mattson. No one does this well without intentional practice. Not even the professionals! We will laugh, learn, practice, and gain deeper insights into the fundamentals of what James refers to as being "slow to speak, quick to listen, and slow to anger". Your marriage is always worth the investment!

100 Days with Jesus // Jan. 7

Screen Shot 2017-12-27 at 3.49.02 PM.png

Starting Jan. 7, Missio will be starting a journey of 100 days with Jesus. We believe Jesus loves us and wants to know us, and has created us to journey through life in relationship with him and others. The book "100 Days with Jesus" will help us to know Jesus more fully as we read his Scripture, reflect on who he is, and share with one another as we meet him along the way. Books will be available at Missio starting Sunday, Jan. 7.

As we journey together, share what you’re hearing with others! God’s words to you can be an encouragement to those around you, so talk with your family, friends, and Missional Community about what you’re learning and how the challenge of daily reading and reflecting is going. Check out our 100 Days with Jesus Facebook group to share your thoughts and be encouraged by how others are hearing from Him.

Serving Opportunities at Missio

A fantastic way to get plugged into the Missio Community is to serve! Here are a few ways to share your giftings, talents and time:

MISSIO KIDS
Missio Kids exists to partner with parents in discipling their children toward knowing Jesus and making Him fully known in the world. We have four different classes where we serve kids ages birth through 5th grade and volunteers serve once a month on a regular rotation. As a weekly team, we pray together before each Expression, work together to set up and tear down all our classrooms, and get to know one another as we serve kids and parents each month.
Current needs:
- 4 2s & 3s Volunteers
- 4 Pre-K/Kindergarten Teacher’s Assistants
- 4 Elementary Teacher’s Assistants
- 2 Check-in Volunteers
Contact: Amy@missioportland.org // (503) 961-3456

WORSHIP
The vision of our worship ministry is to become authentic worshipers of Jesus in our every day lives and allow that identity to shape our communal worship gatherings. We serve on Sundays by leading worship through song, prayer, and readings from the stage. We also serve by performing behind the scenes tasks, such as running sound, slides, and organizing the different people serving on a given Sunday.
Current needs:
- Worship team (both vocalists and instrumentalists)
- Media
- Sound
Contact: Kelly@missioportland.org // (503) 550-1950

SETUP & BREAKDOWN
The vision of the Missio Setup & Breakdown Team is to create a space where people can enter with minimal distractions and engage worship fully. We serve on Sundays by transforming the gym and other classrooms into spaces of worship as well as setting the rooms back in order so that the school can continue the work of educating and caring for the community.
Current Needs: 4-6 Volunteers
Contact: Joel@missioportland.org // (503) 307-3949

GREETERS
Greeters are some of the first people guests and the Missio family see and interact with at a Sunday Expression. We serve by greeting people as they come through the door, answering questions they may have about Missio, introducing and connecting people to one another, and helping people navigate Sunday Expressions.
Current Needs: 3 Greeters
